Bursting with aromas of potpourri with a dusty, red-fruited essence of wild strawberries, savory herbs and red and black spice, the 2019 Grenache God Only Knows Armada Vineyard is an instant success. Medium-bodied, the palate is fresh with a fine mineral tension that gives way to a firm tannic edge before gliding to a seductive, red cherry skin essence over the lingering, spicy finish. Only 223 cases were produced. I'm always a sucker for this bottling.

A vivacious red driven by a vibrant core of acidity and stony minerality, with multilayered cherry, cranberry and bacon fat accents that zip toward fresh, snappy tannins. Grenache. Drink now through 2032. 547 cases made.

As always, the 2020 Grenache God Only Knows is almost all Grenache brought up in barrels, mostly used. It reveals a translucent ruby hue as well as a complex bouquet of ripe strawberries, framboise, cold fireplace, wood smoke, and shiitake mushrooms. This carries to a medium-bodied Grenache with a focused, elegant texture, present yet fine-grained tannins, and outstanding length on the finish. I don't think this matches the recent series of the 2016 to the 2019, but it's a complex, layered, nuanced Grenache that will keep for 10-12 years, probably longer.

Grenache dominates this wine. The rest? God only knows. Subdued aromas of red fruit, potpourri, pepper and dried herb lead to lighter styled floral flavors. It lingers on the finish. It's a more fruit forward offering than most vintages.
