The origins of Chateau Cantemerle date back to the Middle Ages; documents from the year 1354 reveal that viticultural production was a major aspect of the estate almost from the very beginning. It wasn’t until the 15th century, however, that wine making became the main industry of Cantemerle. Ownership of the Chateau changed hands many times over the centuries, from the Villeneuve de Durfort family in 1579, to the Dubos family in 1892. Today, it covers an area of about 90 hectares and is managed by SMABTP Group, one of the first insurance companies to take possession of a vineyard in Bordeaux.

The soils of Cantemerle are a combination of silica and gravel which are the result of erosion of the Pyrenees by the Garonne 1,000 years ago. These soils have excellent filtration and good heat absorption, however they are poor in nutrients, resulting in hardy vines that produce grapes of high concentration. With its superbly deep color, the wine has the grand style of an elegant evening gown.

The aromas are equally graceful: partly woody, partly spicy, but still young and far from fully developed. In the mouth, the wine shows the classic personality of superbly quintessential Cabernets from a great Médoc terroir: exotic wood character with licorice, and pepper flavors, and a touch of red fruit. The wine's structure displays reserve and complexity, with a well tempered richness and great length. You can begin to enjoy the wine's charm and elegance after decanting one hour before serving. It represents a perfect model of elegance, balance, and the fine flavors typical of Cantemerle's greatest wines.

A well-constructed wine that is ripe with black fruits and integrated tannins, this is in a good place for aging. Black-currant fruitiness is balanced by a dry, smoky core that holds promise. Drink this wine from 2026.

A ripe, full-bodied, slightly chewy wine that brings plenty of character, the 2018 Château Cantemerle offers lots of smoky black fruits, graphite, background oak, notable overall balance, and impressive, polished tannins. It needs 2-4 years in the cellar, but this solid, seriously good Haut-Médoc should still be going strong at age 15.

A vanilla note frames a mix of warmed plum and cassis flavors, while a nice touch of dark earth infuses the finish. Open-knit and ready-to-go, too. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2023. 22,166 cases made.

The 2018 Cantemerle is going through a challenging time. Mid-weight structure and harsh, angular tannins are penalizing. Dark cherry, graphite, dried herb and coffee struggle to emerge, but the 2018 never really fills out.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Cantemerle leaps from the glass with scents of Morello cherries, raspberry pie, fruitcake and prunes, plus hints of potpourri and unsmoked cigars. The medium-bodied palate is chewy and a little tart, featuring some otherwise pleasant fruitcake flavors, finishing just a little drying and rustic.
