The Cave de Tain is among the world's very greatest wine producers, a giant of the Northern Rhone with over 50 acres in Hermitage, a stunning, state-of-the-art winery (10 million Euros invested over the past five years) and a brilliant team of winegrowers. Besides Hermitage, they produce most of the region's IGP (previously Vin de Pays) and half of all Crozes Hermitage (but bottling only a third of that under their own top label), as well as St Joseph, Cornas and St. Peray.
The super 2017 Saint Peray Fleur de Roc is a selection of old vines (95% Marsanne and 5% Roussanne), all aged in 400-liter casks. It offers notes of toasted hazelnuts, ripe melon and citrus. It's medium to full-bodied, with a creamy, concentrated feel to the mid-palate and a long, silky finish. It's delicious now, so why wait?
White blossom and tangerine zest are shaded by earth and nut in this juicy, gorgeously fruity Marsanne (augmented by just 5% Roussanne). Vinified and aged primarily in oak (25% new), it's delightfully plush but maintains crisp lemon and pear flavors, too. Drinks nicely now but should hold through 2025.
