Axr Winery Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
|California, Napa Valley
A mysterious and compelling expression of Napa Valley’s unique terroir, lingering on dense tannins, dark fruits and chocolate.
If only these vines could talk, they would tell you stories of the old Napa Valley. The history of our estate is compounded in layers; rooted in historic tales of fierce Native American hunting grounds, wild west pioneers and the first woman vintner of California in 1886. It has changed hands over the course of 134 years to become a brewery, restaurant, inn, winery and saloon. Tales of love, lust, heartbreak, murders and great fortune create an imaginative backdrop to our present-day vision of AXR. AXR is now a winery that pays homage to its history and blazes the trail of excitement and innovation in Napa Valley as the pioneers before us did. We want to be reminded every day to live fully and to leave a lasting impression on our layer of history. Named after the AxR rootstock (Aramond x Rupestris) that was so prominent in building the modern California wine industry, AxR#1 eventually succumbed to Phylloxera and most of California wine country was left as a blank canvas. Vintners now had a chance to replant and to rethink the entire structure of the vineyards; attention was paid to the terrior and unique varietals were researched. This was truly a turning point in the wine industry as we know it. The AXR dream was started when four friends were sitting around a table, doing what you do with a glass of Napa Cabernet in your hand… sharing, dreaming, laughing, and occasionally sipping! The table was set with a bountiful California meal, in a room filled with an intense passion for wine and a good story: this is where AXR Winery was born. By utilizing modern and innovative techniques in the cellar, we extract the uniqueness of Napa Valley’s soils into wines enjoyable now, or many years from now.
Refined in rich red fruit, savory spice and bolts of black pepper, this lovely appellation wine shows a roundedness and length—the tannins sweet and well integrated. Dark-plum, cherry and mocha flavors layer atop the smooth texture, providing tremendous quality and complexity for the price. (Editors' Choice)
Blackcurrant and raspberry with some sandalwood and dark chocolate on the nose. Full-bodied with round, savory tannins and plenty of rich fruit at the finish. Firm and prety Two or three years of bottle age will pull it together. Drink after 2022.
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon bursts from the glass with ready-for-business scents of boysenberries, baked blackcurrants and blueberry pie plus suggestions of Indian spices, mocha and balsamic. The medium to full-bodied palate offers a good amount of expressive black fruits with a chewy texture and lifted character coming through on the otherwise spicy finish.
