Rutini Apartado Gran Malbec 2015
Given that 2015 was a tough year in Mendoza, especially for high-expression reds like this, Apartado is an unbridled success. This is round, ripe and complex on the nose, with exotic aromas of cardamom, spiced blueberry and rubber. The palate feels bold, crisp and bright. Flavors of blackberry, boysenberry and mixed spices drop off little by little on the finish. Drink for years to come; cellar through 2035.
(14.5% alcohol; vinified in diamond-shaped stainless steel tanks, then aged for 18 months in new French oak): Good ruby-red. Slightly medicinal cast to the very dark aromas of black cherry, blackberry, licorice and violet. Densely packed, firm and fine-grained, showing a subtle sweetness and noteworthy lift to its juicy berry fruit. Finishes with ripe tannins and lovely length, with an impression of rocky energy.
A peppery note accents the dried red fruit and green herbal flavors that glide across the palate. The minerally finish shows elegant touches. Drink now through 2022. 600 cases made, 100 cases imported.
