Few Rhône Valley producers can compare to the history and pedigree of Ogier. The family name dates to 800 A.D. when “Ogier the Dane” came to fight with Charlemagne’s soldiers in the Basque country, and on his way back home, settled in southeastern France’s Massif Central region. Antoine Ogier, a distant descendant of Ogier the Dane, entered the wine business in 1859, purchasing a cooperage and establishing “OGIER” as a wine producer in the nearby Rhône Valley.

The 2017 Crozes Hermitage les Paillanches blends grapes from loess and granitic soils and ages them in a mix of 300- and 600-liter barrels for a year. Black cherries take on subtle spice shadings in this medium to full-bodied wine that comes across as being tight and needing a bit of time to soften.

Lovely violet, cassis and plum flavors are streaked with a light anise note on the finish. A subtle graphite edge adds support. Drink now through 2024. 3,333 cases made, 250 cases imported.

The 2017 Crozes Hermitage Les Paillanches is much more moderately styled and offers a vibrant purple color as well as tons of blackberry, cassis, licorice, graphite, and ground pepper. With background oak, beautiful purity of fruit, and a full-bodied mouthfeel, it's already drinking nicely yet should keep for 4-6 years. by Jeb Dunnuck, JD, 2018.
