Abiouness Hudson Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006
This is our second vintage making Pinot Noir from the famed Hudson Vineyards, one of the most stunning Carneros properties I've ever seen. Lee Hudson's dedication to excellent grape growing surely shines through in the bottle. The small pinot vineyard known as Block C, is divided into 2 different clones. The Pommard gives the spice, richness, and jammy notes, while the 777 lends an elegance with sweet floral undertones. Since the 2 clones ripened at different rates, they were picked separately averaging 25.8 brix. After sorting and destemming, they were put into separate bins to begin the cold soak and a natural fermentation. Punching down by hand (and clean feet) occurred daily until the wine reached dryness. It was then drained into 40% new French oak where it aged for 11 months. The final blend was then racked and bottled with no fining or filtration. Balanced flavors of ripe wild berries, violets, and dark chocolate covered cherries gain complexity and nuance on the finish where they mingle with a bright acidity and silky, round tannins.
