The 2021 James Berry Vineyard Bone Rock is 82% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 5% Petite Sirah, and 2% Roussanne that aged for 32 months in 225-liter barrels, 84% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it charges out of the glass with bold notes of plum preserves, juicy blackberries, and Indian spices, plus hints of iron ore, dried lavender, and Sichuan pepper. The full-bodied palate delivers a firm, grainy texture, and seamless freshness to frame the taut, muscular black fruits, finishing on a lingering chalky note.

Dark and brooding in the glass, the 2021 Bone Rock tempts the imagination with a beguiling blend of crushed ashen stones, black raspberries and hints of olive and exotic spice. This is velvety in texture yet energetic, with crisp red and black fruits that take on a crunchy sensation. Tactile minerals and rosy inner florals emerge toward the close. Tannic and impossibly long, the 2021 leaves the mouth watering for more while but also begging for relief from its stern structure. There's epic potential here. The 2021 was raised in 84% new French oak.

This evokes ripe figs roasting on a cast iron skillet, caramelizing with wildflower honey, while layers of dried violet, blackberry preserves and licorice add to the complex nature of this velvety yet structured red. Still, theres good energy at the core, which enlivens the finish, gathering the central flavors and carrying them to the long finish around big, ripe tannins. Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah and Roussanne. Drink now through 2040. 404 cases made.
