Caterwaul Wines Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
|Region||California, Napa Valley|
#23 JD Top 100 of 2021
Dark purple all the way to the rim, the wine opens with aromas of creosote, blackberries, espresso roast and toast. Now fully recovered from bottling, it has picked up density and weight adding a rich blueberry core to the palate complemented by baker's chocolate, tobacco and licorice.
I was able to taste three wines from 2018 from Caterwaul, all made by Thomas Rivers Brown. The appellation 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is a winner, offering classic Cabernet notes of ripe dark fruits, tobacco, chocolate, and candied violets. Rich and full-bodied, it has a light, elegant texture, terrific tannins, and a great finish. I suspect it's a knock-it-out-of-the-park value and it should evolve for a solid 15 years.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is not just gorgeous, it is also one of the best values readers will come across. Ripe, juicy and expressive, the 2018 once again hits all the right notes. Inky dark fruit, smoke, licorice, spice and sweet floral accents all race out of the glass. Readers will have a very hard time finding a better wine for the money. The balance of various appellations works so well here. The Caterwaul Napa Valley bottling might just be the finest wine in the market in its price range.
Lush and fruit-filled, with crushed plum, steeped raspberry and warmed cassis notes rolled together, carried by a well-embedded graphite spine. A swath of warm, dark earth cruises through on the finish, but leaves center stage to the fruit. Best from 2021 through 2031. 3,000 cases made.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley comes from around 10 different AVAs in the valley and is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple colored, it bursts with black raspberries, redcurrant jelly and blackberry preserves scents plus suggestions of bay leaves, underbrush and pencil lead. Medium-bodied, the vibrant, youthful palate is jam-packed with black fruit, accented by loads of herbal and red berry sparks, finishing long and energetic.
