Devil Proof Malbec, Farrow Ranch, is a lush, strikingly complex wine that comes from the Alexander Valley hillsides of Farrow Ranch in Northern Sonoma County. There are few sites where a single vineyard, let alone a single block, is better than a blend of multiple blocks or vineyards, but we have found something unique in this one vineyard block which contains all the components of an exceptional wine, exhibiting a true essence of terroir. This rare gem is Block #17 at Farrow Ranch for Devil Proof. The volcanic soil, a blend of Suther loam and Pleasanton gravelly loam, is ideally suited to this Malbec and allows us to successfully dry-farm the vineyard. This block was planted in 2002 with a mix of Clone 4 and Clone 595 Malbec grafted to 1103P grapevine rootstock. An adjacent large steep hillside creates great air movement through the vines which further enhances the wide diurnal temperature swings so well-known in this region. The result is beautifully ripe and fresh berries with firm acidity and unparalleled elegance for its power.

The 2018 Farrow Ranch Malbec was aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a bit of coaxing to unlock fragrant notes of fresh boysenberries, rose oil, star anise, and baked plums, plus touches of tilled soil and truffles. Full-bodied on the palate, it is rich, seductive, and yet incredibly light on its feet, with wonderfully ripe tannins leading to a very long and perfumed finish on this mind-blowing wine. 375 cases were made.

The 2018 Malbec Farrow Ranch from Devil Proof is the best example of 100% Malbec I've ever tasted. Opaque purple-black in color, the nose explodes to pure, kaleidoscopic aromas of blueberry preserves and dark cherries, milk chocolate, dried lavender, pencil shavings and wild mint. The palate is spectacular with a velvet-like texture and bursts of freshness elevating its pure floral perfume. It's fragrant, layered and seamless, the last drop better than the first, and it leaves you wanting just one more sip! Only 375 cases were made.

Slightly deeper and richer, with more blackcurrant fruits as well as tobacco, lead pencil, spice box, graphite, and dried flower-like nuances, the 2018 Malbec Farrow Ranch is a beauty, hitting the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, multi-dimensional texture, building tannins, and a stunning finish that carries remarkable minerality as well as freshness. Malbec doesn't get any better, and this magical wine will evolve for 20 years or more. It’s the finest Malbec I’ve ever tasted and hats off to winemaker Jesse Katz.

"Firm, supple tannins support an earthy, herbal undercurrent of cedar, pencil lead and sweet tobacco in this varietal wine. A rich blue-berry flavor explodes on the palate, while a leathery texture melds with a hint of dark chocolate."

Precise and wonderfully detailed, featuring fresh, juicy cranberry, blood orange and raspberry flavors at the core, with firm and muscular tannins. The long finish shows accents of dried lavender, dark chocolate and pepper that linger. Drink now through 2038. 375 cases made.

The 2018 Malbec Farrow Ranch is gorgeous. Bright, floral and punchy, the 2018 is bursting at the seams with varietal character. Inky dark red/purplish berry fruit, spice, leather, tobacco and rose petal are some of the notes that come alive in the glass. This is very nicely done.
