Rated 96 by James Suckling This is a very subtly played Chianti Classico Riserva that opens to reveal brambleberries, dried orange peel, vanilla, tobacco, cedar, spice box and grilled meats. Very structured on the palate with loads of firm tannins, coated with generous fruit and refreshened by cutting acidity. Drink in 2023.

The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardo is laced with the essence of black cherry, plum, dried flowers, game, spice and leather. Surprisingly light for a Castelnuovo Berardenga Riserva, the 2016 is drinking quite well today. This is a decidedly restrained wine for the southern part of the appellation. There is good acidity, but less fruit and overall depth than I expected. Even so, all the elements are nicely put together.
