L’usine is Phinney’s latest rollout for Gallo. Coming from vineyards in Sonoma Coast, Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Lucia Highlands, sporting his signature impactful labels and packaged in a seriously fun, innovative, custom-made Lucite six-pack case, this could be his most impressive project yet. L’usine means “the factory” in French, and so Phinney’s name for this collection comes from Andy Warhol’s term for his iconic/iconoclastic art studio: The Factory.

Sourced from growers in the Sta. Rita Hills (John Sebastiano Vineyard, Sea Smoke Vineyard and Radian Vineyard), this new wine from David Phinney (creator of the famous/infamous brand, The Prisoner) was aged for nine months in oak barrels, 60% new. Pale to medium ruby-purple colored, the 2017 Pinot Noir sashays out of the glass with graceful kirsch, raspberry preserves and redcurrant jelly notes plus hints of oolong tea, violets and cinnamon stick. Medium-bodied, the palate is delicately played with bright red berries and spicy accents plus a satiny texture, finishing with lovely poise. 1,000 cases were made.

The 2017 Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills) is a big, fruit wine that expresses all of the natural richness that comes so easily in the Sta. Rita Hills. Inky red/purplish berry fruit, wild flowers, spice, vanillin and sweet floral notes infuse the 2017 with notable depth. This unabashedly sumptuous, extroverted Pinot delivers the goods. It will appeal most to readers who like heady, racy Pinots.
