Rare new release from winemaker Jesse Katz one of California's hottest new winemakers under the Devil Proof and Aperture labels. Limited.

The label was shot by Jesse's father, renowned photograph Andy Katz, in Cuba in the early 90s and is one of his favorite photographs. The expression of the Cuban woman joyfully holding a Cuban cigar in hand says what you need to know about the wine. For his first wine under his first label, Jesse wanted to make a wine that pushed the boundaries. He didn’t want to take the easy road. So, he decided to take a grape varietal that’s not commonly made in California (and when it is made, it’s generally not well-made), stuck to his guns and made a great Malbec.

The 2018 Ridge Malbec was 100% barrel fermented and aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. Very deep purple-black in color, it springs from the glass with gregarious, seductively opulent scents of roses, sandalwood, and liquid licorice, plus hints of dark chocolate and fragrant earth, plum preserves, and cherry cordial. Full-bodied on the palate, rich, and with amazing tension, it is velvety, long, decadent, and so polished. 375 cases were made.

All Malbec from a great appellation in the heart of Sonoma, the 2018 Malbec Rockpile Ridge offers a classic, exotic, blue fruit-driven style with a wealth of blueberries, wildflowers, iron, tobacco, and crushed stone. Flawlessly balanced and full-bodied on the palate, it has an awesome mid-palate, a vibrant sense of freshness and acidity, and a killer finish. It's one of the finest Malbecs out there, yet it's slightly closed and backward and needs 4-5 years of bottle age. It should have two decades of overall longevity.

Deep purple-black in color, the 2018 Malbec Rockpile Ridge Vineyard opens very slowly to detailed aromas of mint chocolate, pencil shavings, cassis, aniseed and exotic spices over intense blue and red fruits. The palate offers powdery tannins and plush ripeness tempered by streaks of rocky mineral character, finishing very long. This Rockpile Ridge Malbec gets better and better year after year! 575 cases were made.

Herbal, earthy and deeply concentrated, successfully signaling its high-elevation appellation, this wine shows a wealth of slate, crushed rock and graphite elements. Boldly layered and plush in texture, it delivers lush, rich flavors of dark cherry, blueberry and blackberry around teases of baking spice and leather.

The 2018 Malbec Rockpile Ridge is fascinating to taste next to the Merlot from Farrow Ranch. Here Malbec is dark and intensely brooding. Black cherry, gravel, spice, menthol, licorice, dried herbs and licorice infuse the 2018 with tremendous character. This is an especially potent, structured wine. Another year or two in bottle will only help.

Complex and expansive, showcasing dark chocolate, wild blackberry and spiced plum flavors that are dense and toothsome, with aromatics of sweet paprika, clove and malty Assam black tea. Continues to gain momentum on the long finish, with the tannins turning velvety. Drink now through 2036. 575 cases made.
