Felsina produces wines with some of the most finesse in Tuscany, with Rancia often referred to as one of the grand cru sites of Chianti. Their refinement and passion for great wine is achieved through elevating the Sangiovese grape to the world-class level every vintage. Felsina was founded in 1966 when the estate was bought by Domenico Poggiali Felsina, who had the dream of accelerating the struggling viticulture of Tuscany at the time. The immediate success from the first vintage in 1983 opened the door to integrity that Tuscany was missing. Here we have a candidate for the best bottle Felsina has ever produced from their Rancia Vineyard, rivaling the mythic vintages of 2016, 2015, and 2013. 2018 is a fantastic vintage with an impressive presence, and for how powerful the year can be, the Rancia always finds balance with freshness, elegance, and structure. Comparatively, 2018 lands somewhere between the opulence of 2015 and the structure of 2016 with the elegance of 2013. Felsina Rancia rewrites the rules for price-quality as one of the top buys of the vintage from Tuscany while also proving that this wine is a consistent masterpiece every vintage. We have excellent pricing here on this current release, and if you only get one Tuscan wine this vintage, this should be it.

The 2018 is an unusual vintage that shows an especially austere character. Off the bat it must be said that the Fèlsina 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia would certainly benefit from more cellar time and a long drinking window. The Rancia is elegant and streamlined with a medium-bodied style that breaks from some of the more concentrated vintages we've seen in the past. The bouquet reveals a lot of dark or black character with blackcurrant tar resin iron ore and a dusty hint of dry graham cracker (which reminds us of the vintage heat). Structurally the wine offers a solid and firm footing but it would benefit from further evolution.

This is really subtle and complex with cherry herb floral and sage aromas that follow through to a full body with firm fine tannins that give form and energy to the wine. Racy and very fine. Drink or hold.

There is a green, leafy edge along with vanilla aromas surrounding the black cherry and resinous oak flavors on the palate in this sinewy red. Finishes on the chewy side, with austere tannins. Needs time. Best from 2024 through 2035. 4,000 cases made.
