Most of the vineyards, from the greatest to the more modest ones, now produce a second growth. It is therefore essential to consider the soil's possibilities as well as the quality requirements of the wine owner. Indeed, the quality level of the second wine is directly derived from the first of these elements. Croix Beaucaillou, like a first growth, is therefore submitted to careful selection. Most of the wines coming from the plots of young vineyard as well as the lesser batches will incorporate the third growth which will be sold or... drunk at the chateau. Croix de Beaucaillou is thus subjected to a reasoned blending aimed at producing a wine which will of course reveal its assets earlier than Ducru B but also the characteristics of a great Saint Julien: elegance, finesse and of course its ability to age. It is worth noting that this wine is far superior to the connotation of 'second wine'. It is a great, noble wine, which we are sure will play a prominent role in the Saint-Julien appellation. La Croix de Beaucaillou has been bottled on the property since 1995

This is an exceptional vintage for La Croix. It has voluptuous fruits that emerge from the ripe dense tannins. They are balanced by intense acidity and a crisp edge. The wine, with its still stylish character, is one to age for a long time. Drink this very fine wine from 2025.Roger Voss, April/2017

Extremely aromatic with crushed-raspberry and plum character. Sweet tobacco, too. Hints of wet earth and dried mushrooms. Medium to full body, silky and racy tannins and an oyster-shell and iodine finish. A beauty. Drink in 2019..February/2017

The 2014 La Croix de Beaucaillou has enjoyed a purple patch in recent vintages. The nose on the 2014 appeared to have closed down after bottling, but the quality is still tangible, almost sedate, but exquisitely defined tertiary red berry fruit gradually opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and energetic, very focused with superb mineralite. There is just a mote of hardness and rigidity on the finish, but that will be abraded by bottle age (and this is one Deuxieme Vin that benefits from bottle maturity)..March/2017

The 2014 Croix de Beaucaillou is a very dark, powerful, concentrated second wine in an especially juicy style. Black cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and dark spice build into the huge, voluptuous finish. Tasted two times..Antonio Galloni, February/2017
