Podere Poggio Scalette

Intense ruby red in color. The wine has an ample bouquet dominated by the scent of blackberries and currant. This is a full bodied, warm, rich wine loaded with character. The tannins are balanced, soft yet full of vitality supporting a persistant and lingering finish. Recommended with red meats such as Bistecca all Fiorentina (grilled T-bone). Also a great match for venison and aged cheeses.

Wine Advocate

Poggio Scalette occupies a beautiful spot in the hills of Greve. Proprietor Vittorio Fiore is one of Italy’s best known consulting oenologists so it can be no surprise that he and his son Jurij turn out gorgeous wines at their own estate. The 2003 Carbonaione (100% old-vine Sangiovese) is made in a big, powerful style that captures the essence of the vintage in its richness while maintaining superb overall balance. It offers generous dark fruit, earthiness, toasted oak and mineral notes with notable length and expansiveness on the palate. A lingering note of sweetness and finessed tannins round out the finish of this terrific wine. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2021.

Score: 92. —Antonio Galloni, June 2007.

Wine Enthusiast

Enologist Vittorio Fiore has crafted a very distinctive wine with a vibrant ruby color, nice concentration and full-force aromas of blueberry, chocolate and smoked bacon. But what won me over was an elegant and precise point of white mineral or chalk that appears on the nose. It ages for 44 months and is succulent and chewy with firm tannins. Drink after 2008.

Score: 92. —Monica Larner, May 01, 2007.

Wine Spectator

Plum, vanilla and light coffee aromas. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Gorgeous. Well-made and balanced for the vintage. Sangiovese. Best after 2008.

Score: 91. —James Suckling, October 31, 2006.
