Luciano Sandrone

“Cannubi Boschis” Barolo is Luciano Sandrone's historic wine, and has been his leading wine since 1985. It is also his only cru: the Nebbiolo grapes all come from the prestigious Cannubi subzone in Barolo. Perched at an altitude of 250 meters (820 feet), the vineyards are perfectly exposed South and Southeast. The wine is fermented in 500 and 600-liters French oak barrels then aged for 24 months in the same wood. Only 8,900 bottles of this vintage were produces.

Wine Advocate

The 1999 is easily one of the best wines in the series. It offers rich sensations of spices, flowers, toasted oak and minerals along with well-delineated layers of ripe dark fruit, menthol, and eucalyptus flavors, finishing with exceptional structure, length and freshness. I didn’t taste the superb 1989 (see above) at age six, but when I tasted this 1999 on a later occasion, the first thing that came into my mind was a young version of that wine. The 1999 will require at least a few years of bottle age and will start to be at its best around 2009, after which it should last another decade. 95+ points/drink after 2009.

Score: 95. —Antonio Galloni, April 2007.

International Wine Cellar

Full, bright red. Subdued but deep aromas of smoky red fruits, plum, dried rose, camphor and game; Barolo meets Burgundy. Fat, lush and compellingly sweet; broader and suppler today than Le Vigne, conveying an impression of lower yields. Already shows compelling depth. Here the tannins seem finer and sweeter, or is there simply more powerful buffering material? Lovely finishing flavors of red fruits and spices.

Score: 93. —Stephen Tanzer, November 2002.

Wine Spectator

Beautiful and complex nose of berry and flowers, offering notes of meat and dried spices. Full-bodied, with soft, silky tannins and a long, rich finish.—'99 Piedmont blind retrospective (2009).

Score: 92. —James Suckling, 2009.
