SANDRONE LUCIANO is a family-run wine maker and farmer established in 1978. The total area is 16 hectares, which is completely covered by vines. 2.5 of them are planted with Nebbiolo grapes for the production of BAROLO CANNUBI BOSCHIS, 3 hectares are planted with Nebbiolo grapes for the production of BAROLO LE VIGNE, 2.5 hectares are planted with Barbera grapes for the production of BARBERA D’ALBA, 5 hectares are planted with Dolcetto grapes for the production of DOLCETTO D’ALBA and last but not least 3 hectares are planted with Nebbiolo grapes for the production of NEBBIOLO D’ALBA VALMAGGIORE. These are produced in the municipality of Vezza d’Alba; geographically on the right hand side of the river Tanaro, between the Langhe and the Roero hills. The vineyard area giving origin to these wines is hilly and named LANGHE. From a geological standpoint the district is fairly simple. It is a ground of tertiary origin and referring to the area of production of the BAROLO wine, the ground dates back to the Miocene and is composed as follows: Helvetian- with predominant deposits of sand and limestone conglomerates. - Tortonian: with typical bluish limestone marnes. The Company prefers to produce a limited quantity of grapes per vine to be able to obtain a higher concentration of the constituents characterizing wine quality. The company also tends to reduce vine parasite treatments and only uses organic fertilisers. We also want to control production according to the season trend and determine the best ripening point, when the grapes should be harvested. This is obtained by taking samples during the ripening phase in order to harvest and vinify vineyard after vineyard according to the grapes ripening. A very soft pressing is carried out in our cellars with a simple picking- pressing machine. The pressed grapes immediately start to ferment thanks to indigenous yeasts. During fermentation temperature and extraction process are kept under control. Maceration times are shorter than the traditional ones. We try to improve malolactic fermentation and then we promote a slow spontaneous stabilization thanks to the winter cold. Some wines are then refined in French oak casks in a capacity ranging from 600 to 700 litres for a period that depends on wine sort and vintage. Then Barbera d'Alba is bottled and rests for a further period of 6 to 8 months, while Barolo rests in the bottles for another 24 months' period. However this procedure allows a combination of traditional and technological innovations. Visit the Luciano Sandrone website.
