Château La Mission Haut Brion

The harvest had shown high sugar levels. Tannic richness is vast, reaching record levels in the Merlots and above all the Cabernets. The lush tannins are also extremely ripe. They are copious, silky, and smooth, filling the mouth and coating the palate with delight. Strangely, the crispness of the fruit usually fades in such conditions. Nothing could be further from the truth in 2003. The wine has retained a highly discernible, smooth and ripe fruitiness, while staying very crisp.

Wine Advocate

The 2003 La Mission Haut-Brion is a large-scaled wine offering a distinctive bouquet of scorched earth, black cherry liqueur, and hints of blackberries, blueberries, graphite, and smoke. Ripe, heady, full-bodied, soft, and revealing considerable complexity, low acidity, and a broad, expansive mouthfeel, it should drink well in 2-3 years and last for two decades. Its 13% plus alcohol is normal for this hot year.

Score: 94. —Robert Parker, April 2006.

Wine Enthusiast

93-95 Every year, this estate turns in a wine which closely rivals the neighboring Haut-Brion. This year, the rivalry is just as intense. This has sweet, ripe, beautiful fruit, delicious acidity already. But wait for the tannins to kick in.

Score: 94. —Roger Voss, June 03, 2004.

Wine Spectator

Aromas of blackberry, tobacco and hints of oak. Full-bodied, with lots of silky and round tannins and a long finish. Lots going on here. Layered and powerful. Best after 2010.

Score: 94. —James Suckling, March 31, 2006.
